Looking to make bedtimes calmer, easier and happier? And shorter?! Then look no further…..
Each activity is super quick to set up – parents don’t have time for fancy pants activities – something has to give and it mustn’t be you.
You may read into my obsession with bedtime tasks that I have an unruly, crazy bunch who would terrify even super nanny. Well done, you’re sooooo right.
You might also think we must have had our fair share of crazy, stressy and unhappy bedtimes to be cracking open so much stationary. You’d be right again. (You’re really good at this.)
And we still do have some crazy bedtimes BUT I reckon that we are in good company! After all we are our little peoples’ safe places. Kids are meant to test boundaries and have a hunger to learn. But these activities and planning a bit for bedtimes (sometimes!) has really helped.
I can promise that these six activities WON’T fix every bedtime (if they do then you must come and do ours!) but they should help .
They should bring with them bedtimes that you can all enjoy, a feeling of fuzziness and a speedier process. Sometimes! Hey just once makes things worth it in my book
It is normal. Promise.
With parenting I think it is so easy to feel like you’re doing stuff wrong. That everyone else has it all sussed. But that is utter nonsense!
Kids simply don’t want the lovely day to end . Parenting is meant to be messy. Kids have a lot to process and make sense of BUT (big massive hummungous but!) you need an evening and a break for yourself*. And you shouldn’t feel guilty about this. Plus looking after overtired children the next day is zero fun.
So, with bedtimes feeling a lot like Groundhog Day (complete with lots moaning – mainly from me. Which wasn’t a great start to whatever little bit of evening I got!) I decided that things needed to get better. And that they could get better with very little work
History doesn’t have to keep on repeating itself. Things can be mixed up a bit. Kids can be redirected. I knew this as a teacher but as a parent I was soooooo much more tired! So it took over six years to properly get my thinking cap on!
But it can change.
If you’re in a similar boat and trying to work out how you can enjoy the process more, read on…..all of the activities that follow are designed with speedier bedtimes in mind (and low effort from you!) with these added benefits….
- extra happiness
- self esteem – them and you!
- development of their idea of self
- mental health support
- chance to share worries
Please stick around and see what you fancy trying. And pretty please come back and let me know how you get on. Or find me on Facebook or Instagram.
Lastly please say hello!
I’m always looking to link up with other sites and people doing similar things, so give me a wave in comments or a contact via email if you think we could be friends
And good luck tonight! X
I really am going to stop talking now
Well, in a minute. Here follows my current SIX favourite bedtime activities (in a rough chronological order, so that you get a feel for how things have developed and improved).
I solemnly promise that you will get way more out (both time wise and emotionally) than you put in. You will often GAIN time!
Honestly, I can’t believe how quickly mine can actually find and put on PJs. Game changing. And this was without using these fab timers! Trying to make bedtime a bit more special meant I got to see it with my own eyes .
*DISCLAIMER – if you have a nap transitioning toddler this might not help much until they’ve dropped it. Living this now
